Abstract

A paleomagnetic study of the lacustrine sediments from the Guadix-Baza basin (South of the Iberian Peninsula) has led to a sequence of magnetic polarity of the Fuente Nueva section. This section is representative of an area in the basin where plenty of Plio-Pleistocene paleontological sites (macromammals and micromammals) can be correlated. Along the 35 meters-long section only reversed polarities have been observed, what, according to biostratigraphical data, means a sedimentation restricted to the Matuyama chron, thus not extending the Middle Pleistocene (Brunhes normal polarity chron).
